The large town of Luton, less than half an hour's drive from London, rose to importance in the 19th century as the center of the straw and hat making industry and later the home of Vauxhall cars and Whitbread brewing. With the decline of these industries in recent decades, the city has been forced to move to a service based economy and relies mainly on retail and light industry. The London Luton Airport is the home and headquarters of the low cost Easyjet airline which provides easy international access and makes Luton venues a very popular choice for conferences, meetings, trade shows and exhibitions.

The Kenilworth Road Stadium, home of Luton Town Football Club (fondly know as 'The Hatters' after the hat making industry) is the destination of many football fans while the University of Bedfordshire is also located here. The Luton Carnival is the largest one-day carnival in Europe and also attracts thousands of visitors.

A trip out of town and into the country is a favorite activity for guests at local venues. The wooded hill of Clappers to the north offers lovely walking paths while the eastern edge of the Chilterns, Dunstable Downs is another popular place for outdoor pursuits such as gliding and kite-flying. The green pasturelands and villages with half-timbered cottages and thatch roofs provide a welcome break for meeting and conference delegates. The nearby towns of St Albans, Hitchin and Welwyn Garden City provide interesting shopping excursions. Here too, in the peace and tranquility of the countryside are charming Luton venues that include hotels, conference and wedding centers including the historic Queen Anne House at Hunton Park.
